🚨 If your Daikin heat pump sounds like a helicopter taking off during this Cape Cod cold… don’t ignore it.
We’re seeing this a lot right now across Cape Cod.
On this Daikin heat pump, the outdoor fan was actually hitting built-up ice inside the bottom of the condenser.
Here’s why it happens:
❄️ In heating mode, frost builds up on the outdoor coil
🔁 The system goes into defrost and melts that frost
💧 Water drains to the base pan
🌡️ Temps drop fast (like they do here on the Cape)…
🧊 That water refreezes and builds up
After a few cycles, the fan blades start striking the ice.
That loud scraping or banging noise?
That’s your fan motor fighting ice.
If ignored, it can:
- Crack fan blades
- Damage the motor
- Cause vibration issues
How to prevent it:
✔️ Keep snow cleared around the unit
✔️ Make sure it’s elevated properly above grade
✔️ Ensure proper drainage under the condenser
✔️ Get winter maintenance before peak cold hits
If your system is making unusual noise — shut it off and have it checked before it turns into a bigger repair.
